Both of us have a great love for this section of the country and the life style it offers. The laid-back cowboy atmosphere fits how most of us wish we could live. We enjoy participating in what is left of the real West.
Jim spent his early career with the US Forest Service as a forest ranger in Wyoming and Colorado. His background in wildlife and range management has been invaluable to our operation. He trains horses in any spare time that he has. Cowboy poetry, historical recollection, and story telling are just some of his hobbies.
Dixie enjoys young people and animals. She grew up in the area as her family came here in 1911. Her family raised registered Hereford cattle while Dixie was young. It was her job to help tame the young bulls to ready them for sale. Through rodeo and 4-H she was able to put to use her interest in cows and horses. She has taught public school for 20 some years and now only substitute teaches.
At present, Jim and Dixie own or manage three separate ranches in the Pine Ridge area. Their cow-calf, sheep (Dixie's project) and horse operation is spread out over these lands. The Ox Yoke Ranch Retreat is their summer pasture headquarters. It is very special to Dixie as she used to live there.
Together they enjoy the area trail-rides, rodeo and horse shows.
